Sunday, January 17, 2010 Fiona I spent a while last night with a friend trolling through YouTube videos including a number by Fiona Apple and discovered that I somehow managed to miss this gem from her last record Extraordinary Machine, featuring none other than Zach Galifianakis. I just woke up from being asleep on the couch and, on my way to my bed, decided that it would be a reasonable time to sit down and watch DIG!, the documentary by Ondi Timoner about The Brian Jonestown Massacre and--incidentally, really--The Dandy Warhols. It's screening this week as part of Pitchfork's more or less rad One Week Only series, and I implore you absolutely to check it out. I've known about this doc for many years but had never gotten around to watching it because I'd always been disinterested in the Dandy Warhols and knew little about The BJM (other than that they played vaguely psychedelic garage rock). Now though, after watching it, holy lord am I a believer (though I'm still entirely disinterested in the Dandy Warhols). Which is a testament not just to the immense talent of band and Anton Newcombe as a songwriter, but to the excellent work by Timoner in fashioning this once-in-a-lifetime story into a gripping and concise treatise on music, art, and making or breaking it in an art world not run by artists. The thing I'll say about the film and the band is that--while perhaps this opinion is strictly the gift of hindsight--I'm a little bit bewildered by how convinced so many people seemed to be about the "certainty" over the fact that The BJM were destined for some kind of stardom. A point is made by Anton and others later on in the film that by the early 2000s, many bands achieving popularity like the White Stripes were just traveling a road the BJM had traveled since the early 90s. The point is entirely true and hints at perhaps the real reason the band never took off. Beyond any of the craziness and unpredictability of its members (especially Anton, obviously), I am struck mostly by the thought that in the mid to late 90s (96-2000), there was almost no popular*** music being made that sounded anything like the raucous throwback sound of the BJM. That period in mainstream music coincides precisely a stretch some of the tamest and poppiest mainstream tunes dominating the charts, and there appeared at the time to be little room for any kind of band that wasn't warm, clean and/or completely straight. Most pop offerings were either rap or the boy band variety, and the harder rock offerings were of the blandest, faceless arena rock variety (Creed, POD, etc) or the most soul-crushing uberclean rap-rock (Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc). I just basically don't get how ANYONE heard the BJM's loose, wild, uber-retro 60s sounds and thought, "These guys are awesome and are gonna be a sure hit". By 2001 or so the landscape had changed entirely, but by then the crazy combustible commune of BJM had broken apart and, just as importantly, were no longer pumping out two to three records a year. And now Anton is mostly just footnote made popular by a not-widely seen documentary depicting him as a crazed, drug-addicted madman. Last thoughts: In the last six hours I've downloaded three of their records: Take It From The Man$, Give It Back, and Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request, and I'm completely blown away by their total awesomeness (and equally stunned by the fact I've made it to 2009 without giving these guys a real listen). Watch the film and, most importantly, pick up the records. NOTES: *** -- By "popular" I mean record-selling success, not "of the popular form". $$$$ -- One aside on this record: the track "Monkey Puzzle" sounds exactly like the blue-print for Greg Cartwright's alcohol-soaked 60s southern soul blues. Like, EXACTLY. Friday, August 07, 2009 Ms. Ryan Adams The above in-store interview with Mandy Moore at famed Amoeba Records strikes me as a little strange. I'd somehow forgotten that Moore married Ryan Adams recently, a fact which still seems odd to me. But far odder than that are the expressions on her face as she answers questions--she definitely seems like she's trying to be frank and relaxed, and I respect that... but whoa, it doesn't really look that way. The expressions on her face almost don't seem to line up with the words coming out of her mouth--her eyebrows in particular are constantly furrowed, her lips pursed, and her eyes narrowed. The appearance of such mannered posturing belies the sound of honesty in her voice and makes her come off as wooden at best or empty/fraudulent at worst. I also am unable to watch her in this video--especially when she mentions in reference to the Amoeba store that "most of the time i have to drag my husband out of the speed metal section downstairs"--and not also simultaneously "imagine" the interplay and dynamic between her and Adams. And while I've never thought of Ryan Adams as any great wit or tortured soul of human openness, I still didn't imagine he'd go for this kind of thing. Monday, July 13, 2009 To Air Is To Be Human ![]() Check out that amazing 8" verticle leap! As you may know, I've been playing basketball again this year in the first time in forever, and while I'm having a great time, I've been feeling a little bit limited by my pedestrian 5'10" frame. The league is filled largely with ladies and gentlemen who aren't all that tall, for the most part, but this basically means that whoever we play again sticks their biggest guy on me so that I get to play all game with a hand in my face. This point was brought to its most excessive outcome last week, when I was guarded by a 6'7" giant named Chad who, despite being by all accounts a nice and gentle man, swatted about 3 or 4 four of my shots away and, most pointedly, dunked right over me as I attempted to defend a on a fast break. He wasn't an amazing player--quoth Chad: "Dude, seriously, it's no biomechanical feat that I'm able to dunk; it would really just be a shame to all tall men if I couldn't"--but given my poor ball-handling, lack of height and relatively limited verticle leap, his size was significant enough to hamper my game to the point of frustration (despite the fact that the above . I decided therefore today was to begin investigating some exercises that might help improve my leaping ability. I remember growing up and see ads for those funny platformed "strength" shoes that allegedly improved your leap significantly, and imagined that in 2009 there must be new and wonderful iterations of similar snake oil (or not?) silliness. I was not disappointed--see #2 and in bold below: How to Jump Higher to Dunk a Basketball Dunking a basketball has always been the source of awe for the basketball fanatics. Sometimes, dunks can even determine the name of the outcome of a competitive and exciting game. That is why most basketball players nowadays are aiming to get the perfect dunking skills for them to be able to show off or flaunt. However, doing such or attaining such a skill, requires a lot of discipline. That is because to be able to dunk better, the basketball player has to improve and work out his larger muscle group - the legs. Jumping It is very elementary. The knowledge that jumping requires agility and strength of the leg muscle group is a basic and very apparent and logical. Jumping requires applying force to the feet, and to be able to jump higher, more force is needed. That is why to be able to jump higher and dunk a basketball better, here are some useful tips that can be of great help to you, the basketball player. 1) Do leg exercises There are a number of leg exercises. The good thing about it is that these exercises can be done even outside the gym. These exercises can be very simple and can be performed even if you are just standing in the bus terminal, waiting for the next ride. a. Stand firmly on the ground. Then stand on your toes, down to the ground, and do the procedure repeatedly. b. Jump up and down. It does not necessarily be higher. c. Jog round if you have time. Jogging is not just a good leg exercise but also an effective cardiovascular activity. d. Jump using a jumping rope. e. Stretch your leg muscles every now and the. It does not only relaxes you but also improve the circulation in that muscle group. 2) Wear the best shoes when playing the game There are good shoes out in the market nowadays that are very comfortable and ideal for basketball games. Basketball shoes currently are considered necessities in the lives of basketball players. Sometimes, shoes add up to their confidence, which in turn boost agility, inspiration and then, performance. Imagine having a dunk, people will be staring at your shoes, so prepare for the occasion and wear the best shoes. Your shoes tell stories about you, don’t you think? Overall, jumping higher to dunk a basketball depends on your mood during the play. Open up your mind, be happy and relaxed while playing the game. ---------------- Erm............................. really? Really? This is great because he doesn't even attempt to posit a "Seriously guys! the Air in Nikes really DOES make a huge difference!" No, this dude is literally just telling you that you will perform better if you look cool. Wow. Though, I will admit that one part of me appreciates the acknowledgement that self-confidence plays a role in success and achievement. But still! Haa. Loving life. The visit was nice and bike-filled but mostly relatively sad, as my grandfather--known to us all as "Poppy"--is now truly a man of age, and you can see the weight of the world resting heavily on his eyes. In the end, c'est la vie? Or I say that now.
