I Haven't Felt So Disconnected From Popular Culture Since I Fought In The Great Yak War In '97

At work and watching the Grammys for the first time probably in 10-15 years and experiencing a feeling of immense disconnection from popular society at large. It would perhaps not feel as disorienting if I wasn't really into music in general, but it's definitely odd caring about music as much as I do and yet feeling like I know almost nothing about any of these people.

Connected/disconnected: not precisely my idea of entertainment to watch Jamie Foxx and T-Pain trade duelingly indistinguishable autotune lines while Slash rips nonsense on guitar.

Just When I Thought I Was Out, They Pulled Me Back In

Given the more or less crap quality photos of the Holga format (and the fact that you can get all the advantages and flexibility minus the drawbacks with a better 120mm camera like a TLR Yashica), I don't really want to use Holgas anymore... but then they come out with nifty little things like this red Holga and you think, "Well, maybe they are are pretty awesome actually..."

[This Holga belongs to my friend Marcel though.]

Capped and Then Fucked

I promised in an earlier post to after losing my work camera lens cap to the subway system at the Bergen St. stop that I would come back with a photo.

Well, here it is, a week later, and the cap is still there. Apparently the subway attendants have grabbers to retrieve such lost items but I think my cap is just doomed to die on the tracks until it disintegrates or is carried off by rats to help augment their Flotilla Toward God that will eventually take down all of the humans left on earth.

The Warmth Of January

Considering that I had to get a fucking ROOT CANAL yesterday, today seems to have turned out pretty well--beginning with a photoshoot that Royal Scourge and I did for the band Bugs In The Dark. I have basically no experience doing this kind of this (meaning: I have NO idea what I'm doing), but nonetheless I think we did a solid job and got some great shots for the band (photos to come. Hey, small bands of Brooklyn: if you need promoshots and don't have an actual budget to pay a real photographer, let us know.

It was also warm enough today for me to take a bike ride in shorts and a bike jersey, which was wonderful and life-affirming, and then I took a yoga class which kicked my ass. Holla good life times!

Just put up a series of images on my Flickr from an afternoon shooting with Ben D at the Green-Wood Cemetery a few weeks ago and pretty happy with what came out.

I shot with my trusty inherited Nikon FM2n and the completely untrusty and pain-in-the-ass Holga (which I AGAIN shot accidentally at 16 exposures rather than 12). See below for a few good ones, and go here to the Flickr album of the set.

On The Road With Mark 'Odd Job' Jaffe: Dec 22-23, 2009

NYE 2009: A Night In Pictures

I shot some 3200 speed Kodak TMax on New Year's Eve to test out my new 50mm f/1.8 lens.

Incidentally, it was also the birthday of Lil' Beau, so the night was not only fun but joyous. We went to a party at Lil' Beau's beau Noah's and played Boggle, toasted to Lil' Beau in merriment and then closed the night out with a few hours of wall-projected YouTube karaoke. We also made use of an Instamatic camera Noah bought from a garage sale with film that had a 1979 expiration date (we'll see what if anything comes out of that). The whole nigth was surprisingly awesome.

And now, the last of 2009. Not exactly my proudest work, but thems the truths.

So, yeah.

And of course, what would be a fun party without me demonstrating in some fashion that i'm both heavily inebriated and potentially dangerous to both myself and possibly those around me? Thanks, Noah, for these two.
