Someone Please Explain This One To Me

From a pre-race research day where Mneserate and I toured the city's subterranea looking for worthy clues for our Rail World: Underground subway race. Still don't quite get what was going on here.

Just When I Thought I Was Out, They Pulled Me Back In

Given the more or less crap quality photos of the Holga format (and the fact that you can get all the advantages and flexibility minus the drawbacks with a better 120mm camera like a TLR Yashica), I don't really want to use Holgas anymore... but then they come out with nifty little things like this red Holga and you think, "Well, maybe they are are pretty awesome actually..."

[This Holga belongs to my friend Marcel though.]

The Warmth Of January

Considering that I had to get a fucking ROOT CANAL yesterday, today seems to have turned out pretty well--beginning with a photoshoot that Royal Scourge and I did for the band Bugs In The Dark. I have basically no experience doing this kind of this (meaning: I have NO idea what I'm doing), but nonetheless I think we did a solid job and got some great shots for the band (photos to come. Hey, small bands of Brooklyn: if you need promoshots and don't have an actual budget to pay a real photographer, let us know.

It was also warm enough today for me to take a bike ride in shorts and a bike jersey, which was wonderful and life-affirming, and then I took a yoga class which kicked my ass. Holla good life times!

YEZZIR: "'Sup, New York"

Yashica-A shot from last week's Roosevelt Island shoot. Typical Beaumont accidental double-exposure, but also quite cool.

More to come...

The Dead Will Be Redeemed

"The Dead Will Be Redeemed #2". Larger here.

Just put up a series of images on my Flickr from an afternoon shooting with Ben D at the Green-Wood Cemetery a few weeks ago and pretty happy with what came out.

I shot with my trusty inherited Nikon FM2n and the completely untrusty and pain-in-the-ass Holga (which I AGAIN shot accidentally at 16 exposures rather than 12). See below for a few good ones, and go here to the Flickr album of the set.

Hi from Roosevelt Island and Renwick

Atop the Roosevelt Island Parking Garage. I found this empty can and decided to put it on my head and asked Ben D to take my photo. Larger here.

Ben D, Royal Scourge and I trekked out to Roosevelt Island at 8am this morning on a quest to locate and photograph the abandoned Renwick Mental Hospital. We had heard much tell of these ruins and had all been discussing a trip out at some point or another, but we spurred into action by my friend J. Diamond (who in the end couldn't make it) and finally headed over today.

Renwick Hospital, Southern Tip Of Roosevelt Island

From WikiMapia on Renwick here.

Alas, upon arriving we discovered a slight snag to our plans: the entire lower part of the island was locked behind a fence.

We'd heard tell of a barrier to get past but clearly this was something else; from the chain-link fence in front of us, we couldn't even see the hospital. We walked east down the road a bit (you can see it running across the island at the top of the image above) and I found an opening in the fence near the smallest of the three boxes to the far right of the map. I climbed through and began wandering around but something was wrong--there was construction equipment everywhere and almost no vegetation to be found. And as I walked around with ginger concern, a cop car drove by and I had to dash behind a wall to get out of site. I called Ben to ask him where he and Mike were and he told me that they had in fact just opened the part of the fence on the far western side of the road and it looked like we could enter, so I climbed back through the hole and met up with them. Sure enough, we were able to walk through and follow the road alongside the southwestern coast of the island. But the ruins of the hospital... after seeing all sorts of spooky night time photos, final verdict in winter 2010 is, well, not all that interesting.

By 10am, we'd finished exploring what we could of the area near the hospital by, so we ended up turning the entire day into a Roosevelt island photo adventure, which I think in the end I think worked out better. I only had film cameras with me (my Nikon FM2n and Alex's Yashica-A) so I don't got anything yet, but Ben shot digital and once again got some great shit, captured in the photo at the top of this post and in the ones below.

This car, according to Google Earth, has been in this spot for 8 years. Photo by Ben D. Larger here.

On The Road With Mark 'Odd Job' Jaffe: Dec 22-23, 2009

"Truck-worthy Friend Trio"

It's been a few weeks coming but I've finally finished going through the photos I took on my journey before Christmas accompanying Mark Jaffe on a two-day excursion of truck driving and food delivery (documented live here).

"Mark Jaffe, Roadmaster, And His Chariot"

It was a fascinating, exhausting trip, which I will share in greater detail soon, but for the time being here's a photo slideshow I've put together. You can view it below or in larger, fullscreen glory here (recommended).
Alternatively, if you don't like slideshows you can view the whole group of 55 photos here.

NYE 2009: A Night In Pictures

I shot some 3200 speed Kodak TMax on New Year's Eve to test out my new 50mm f/1.8 lens.

Incidentally, it was also the birthday of Lil' Beau, so the night was not only fun but joyous. We went to a party at Lil' Beau's beau Noah's and played Boggle, toasted to Lil' Beau in merriment and then closed the night out with a few hours of wall-projected YouTube karaoke. We also made use of an Instamatic camera Noah bought from a garage sale with film that had a 1979 expiration date (we'll see what if anything comes out of that). The whole nigth was surprisingly awesome.

And now, the last of 2009. Not exactly my proudest work, but thems the truths.

So, yeah.

And of course, what would be a fun party without me demonstrating in some fashion that i'm both heavily inebriated and potentially dangerous to both myself and possibly those around me? Thanks, Noah, for these two.

Instamatic Explosions

Lil Beau's beau Noah found this rad old Kodak Instamatic camera (which shoots cute and easy-loading albeit shittown 110 cartridge format film) at a yardsale when visiting upstate and we busted it out last night to take photos.

Most interesting to me though was the bulb flash it used, which was the above blue-plastic cartridge with eight bulbs each representing one picture. The instamatic I had as a kid had it's own flash, so i'd never seen such a thing and was rather tickled by it.

Of course... no idea what if anything we will get from these photos given that the film we used was dated "use before July 1979", but we'll see!
