1005 And Counting

Small, arbitrary, and meaningless accomplishments though they are, I am nonetheless pleased to announce that I have crossed the 1000 mile marker of biking this spring.

I am now up to 1005 miles since I began tabulating on March 14, and my even more arbitrary goal of 2500 miles by the end of September continues to seem very doable, provided that I am not injured or that my bike does not collapse (both of these things seem increasingly possible).

Truthfully, this is one of those situations where to non-bikers 1000 miles may as well be a million miles, while for real hardcore bikers 1000 miles--or even 2500 miles--is just kid stuff. For me, it feels nice a nice move forward, and it's really fun. The best thing about biking is that only very rarely do I get to the end of a ride and think "wow, so glad I'm home"; I pretty much always finish up thinking, "I could probably go a bit further, couldn't I?" That, more than anything else, seems like probably the best measure of success I could find.
